Personal Branding for Sales Success
Transcript:
When I speak at conferences or associations, I like to wear a monochromatic suit. Now, most would think that because I’m a trainer presenting primarily to banks and insurance groups, I would choose something understated and classic. They would be wrong. Let me tell you, nothing captures a group’s attention more than a 6-foot-1 woman, without heels, walking out on stage in full Kelly Green. And depending on the group I’m in front of, I know that can be a lot to digest—so don’t worry, I have other options. I also have Cobalt Blue and Brilliant Berry Pink! I definitely have a tendency to stand out.
Personal Branding for Sales Success
But what does that have to do with today’s topic—personal branding for sales success? If you have worked with or followed Anthony Cole Training Group for more than six months, there’s a good chance you’ve heard us say, “Don’t look, act, or sound like a salesperson.” With the market saturated with competition, regardless of the business you are in, it is imperative that you stand out. If you’re trying to find a way to break through all the “noise” and capture your prospect’s attention, you have to operate differently than others doing what you’re doing.
Now, I’m not suggesting you go out and buy a brightly colored suit—though I will always support that choice! What I am suggesting, however, is that you must create a personal brand that is individually and unapologetically you. Never inappropriate or unprofessional, but what is it that you bring to the table that makes you “different”? How are you capturing the attention of your intended audience? The key word here is capturing.
For some, it’s how they use and promote their business on social media. In a traditionally corporate business space, many professionals utilize tools like LinkedIn. But I know from many of the people I coach and train, LinkedIn doesn’t generate the attention or conversations they would hope for. I always ask the question: What are you doing—or not doing—that is going to draw customers to you? How are you different? Because it requires more than just sending out connection requests.
Individuals who see great success on platforms like LinkedIn are always active. They create short videos or vlogs, share articles or information that is helpful and additive to their targeted prospect, and feed their timeline daily to generate interest and gain followers. They don’t just promote themselves, their business, and their company. They also focus on being a guide, posing discussion-provoking questions in groups, and promoting resources or partners they believe in.
Personally, I love to create a little bit of a “stir” when I walk into a room or meet with someone new. What has worked for me is being bold and confident in my approach, my style, my presence, and what I bring to the table. And that confidence is what allows me to act boldly.
I encourage you to find your personal brand—whether through your style, your social media presence, your approach, or whatever resonates most with you—and live it authentically!
